In this school assignment, we were suppose to choose a tree in Gothenburg’s botanical garden and then create a sign for that tree. The signs purpose was to tell something else then the usual signs you can see around in botanical gardens.
I choose to work on a sign for the botanical gardens Aibes nebrodensis (also known as Nebrodgran or Sicilian fur) just because its curvy bole caught my eyes and it popped out from the rest of the trees in the surrounding.
When I started my research about the Sicilian fur I found out that it was one of the most endangered furs in the world and it was only used for one thing and one thing only. Decoration, to beautify their surroundings. That was what my sign was going to be about. When I read this, I felt provoked, my thought is that what you found as decorative is much up to you as an observer. Every man and woman has their own personal opinion on what they think is decorative.
My signs encourages the observer to take a stand and think about if the tree fills its function or not. I also wanted to challenge the observer by making three different signs in where one only shows information, one with just some classic graphic design ornaments and one with both elements. I wanted the reader to reflect on what they found as decorative, not just in the woods but also in what they are reading. Does the ornament fill their function together with the text or is the text just unnecessary?
